The Ballon d’Or award is presented annually to the best soccer players around the world. The prize has only been awarded to males until Ada Hegerberg received it this year on December 3rd.

At only 23 years old, Hegerberg has achieved multiple victories. She has scored 120 goals in her last 95 games, playing as a striker for France’s Olympique Lyonnais. She also guided her team to win their third UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Based on her accomplishments, Hegerberg was awarded the prestigious honor in front of millions of people. Unluckily, her moment was quickly disrupted when the show’s co-host, French D.J. Martin Solveig, asked her if she knew how to twerk. Hegerberg snapped “no,” but did not comment further on the provocative comment.

Nevertheless, people on social media were quick to condemn the D.J.’s actions for ruining Hegerberg’s special moment.

Jillian Arthur (12), a former soccer player, commented, “It was very demeaning that the co-host asked her to twerk and it is completely out of his place to make such a comment. Women already are often under-credited in sports and this would not have ever happened to a man.”

Solveig later apologized for his mistake with a video posted on Twitter. He expressed regret, saying that he did not mean to cause any offense and just intended it as a joke.
But Hegerberg herself did not shed light on the issue, as she felt it may overshadow her win.

Hegerberg said to the reports, “In that situation, I did not take it bad, at all. It was kind of like an ironic ‘no,’ and I had a laugh because I was there doing the Ballon d’Or, and that was the only thing I thought about.”

The Norwegian soccer player did not consider the event as sexual harassment. Although Hegerberg appreciated the support from people, she did not want to undercut the moment for female victory.

Muniza Ahmed (10), a supporter of Hegerberg’s actions, said, “I feel that our society should not look through everything based on gender. I believe Hegerberg broke the barriers created between men and women when she won the prize and calmly responded to the inappropriate remark.”

Hegerberg hopes she can continue to inspire young female players to achieve their goals in the field and that sexist comments do not undermine the successes that girls are accomplishing.
