On February 2nd, the world was given the early 2000’s King of Pop Justin Timberlake‘s new album entitled Man of the Woods. His youthful blend of country and pop shows how time and time again he ends up on the Top 100.

Songs like “Filthy” and “Higher Higher” are the epitome of 2000’s Timberlake, and “Filthy” especially stands out. With an assist from producer Timbaland, Timberlake shows off his singing chops over a heavy rap/jazz beat with a heavy amount of innuendos. Timberlake’s voice has not changed one bit with high notes throughout alongside his usual whisper moments.

But Justin is still making glowing happy pop. Songs like “Man of the Woods” keeps an upbeat sound while focusing on Timberlake’s Tennessee history and his love for his lady. He changes and adapts to the song’s several beat changes with a fresh voice for each. The song is reminiscent of his past one-hit wonders with floaty bars and piercing high notes. But Timberlake makes sure to distance himself from his former kid-friendly image with his adult situational lyrics.

But at the end of the day, Timberlake’s albums seem to encompass three great songs with the rest as deep cuts for his fans. On tour, he still plans on performing songs from 2014–that being the bane of his existence. He is trapped in the accomplishments of his past but this new album is different: Justin sheds the commercialist handcuffs of mainstream pop and treks his own path to something he has deserved to do for a long time: make his own music.

This may not be the most popular album for an aging pop king, but it is the most real and treasured by his legion of adoring fans.
