On Monday May 14, the defense attorney of suspect in the Golden State Killer case, Diane Howard, fought against the release of case documents, a search warrant, and statements from other investigators. Howard who has claimed she is preparing for  arguably the largest trial in California history has insisted that pretrial publicity would only make the proceedings against the trial unfair.

The warrants and documents may include an explanation as to why Joseph DeAngelo was behind at least twelve killings, dozens of rapes, and more than 100 burglaries. The affidavits, that total to approximately 114 pages, allegedly contain sensitive information and, if released to the public, could potentially influence witnesses.

The accompanying documents also hold  explanations as to how DeAngelo was considered a suspect from a decades-old arrest case and use of a genealogy website by authorities to connect DeAngelo to the crimes.

DeAngelo, who worked as a police officer until 1979, has been charged with the shooting deaths of two individuals in Sacramento as well as ten other counts of murder, part of a series of crimes committed in the 1980’s. Additionally, DeAngelo may have been involved in several home burglaries and assaults.

The defense are trying to keep the documents confidential until the prosecution turns in a complete list of what police looked for in their search, including what investigators found on DeAngelo’s cell phone and computer.

Muniza Ahmed (10), a member of the Speech and Debate team and follower of the case, said, “I believe that DeAngelo’s evidence should not be released before trial because it is unfair to the defendants side if the prosecution becomes aware of all the evidence being brought up. Also, it is immoral in the court of law for a biased vote.”

Uzair Pasta (10), who is also an active member of Speech and Debate, stated, “The information that was found by the prosecution such as the DNA results should not be released before trial because I believe in our justice system, and there may be damning evidence but the suspect is innocent until proven guilty.”

No decision has been publicly announced on whether DeAngelo will be put on trial for the alleged crimes covering multiple jurisdictions.
