On Tuesday January 9th, representatives from North Korea and South Korea met at the Panmunjom Peace House in the Joint Security Area on the demilitarized zone between the countries for talks. The goal of the talks was to improve relations between the two countries amidst recent tensions over North Korean missile testing and United States-South Korea joint military drills.

After two years of South Korean attempts at communication with North Korea from a hotline in the demilitarized zone, North Korea answered for the first time on January 3rd. After the calls, South Korea was faxed a letter from its northern neighbor agreeing to talk. The letter also said that the country would be sending representatives to meet in Panmunjom to talk with South Korean representatives.

After the talks, North Korea confirmed that they would be sending a team to the Pyeongchang Olympics next month.  In addition, a military hotline between North and South Korea will be reopening.

Lauryn Shin (9), a Korean-American student, feels that the new communication between the two nations is a good step forward. Shin said, “Progress is always good. Since relations between the two nations were not good to begin with, trying to connect better will not make anything worse. I’m glad they are trying to get closer.”

In response to the topic of nuclear weapons, North Korea’s chief negotiator Ri Son-gwon explained that North Korea weapons weren’t targeting South Korea, but rather the United States.

While the threat of nuclear weapons still looms over Korea and the United States, improving relations between South and North Korea could be a step towards peace later on.
