Coffee is the motivation for many to get out of bed each morning and face the day. There is an endless selection of drinks because everyone has the same taste for coffee. Many like coffee black and bitter, and others like it sweet and creamy. The first step to knowing your order is distinguishing the difference between these drinks.

For those who like it rich:

  1. Espresso is just plain, black coffee served in smaller portions due to the bitterness. People can add milk or sugar to lighten the taste, however many drink it straight.
  2. A Macchiato is espresso with a light layer of milk foam on the top. Because of the lack of milk content, this drink is one of the more bolder options.
  3. An Americano is an espresso drink that is topped with hot water to dilute the bitterness. Not quite a sweet drink, however an americano is not as bitter as regular espresso shots. Starbucks describes it as a “wonderfully rich cup with depth and nuance.”

For those who have a sweet tooth:

  1. The Frappuccino (trademarked by Starbucks), is an ice blended drink that only contains a small amount of coffee. It is mainly milk and iced mixed together and you can order it decaf. Starbucks offers it in different flavors such as vanilla, caramel, strawberry, mocha etc.
  2. A Mocha is any type of espresso drink with chocolate in it. Depending on your specific tastes, you can vary the amount of chocolate mixed in. This is the perfect beverage for any coffee and chocolate lover.
  3. Another type of macchiato is the Latte Macchiato. Typically mixed with hot milk and espresso, this drink provides a creamier taste.
  4. A Latte, similar to a cappuccino, is a drink made with espresso and milk. More on the sweeter side, this drink can be as creamy as you want and iced or hot.
  5. The Cappuccino is an Italian-originated, hot coffee drink that is made with a double espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam on the surface. It is often served with cinnamon or chocolate powder. Depending on how much milk and sugar added, this drink can vary in taste.

Knowing your own unique taste for drinks will save you time at Starbucks, Coffee Bean, etc. It is crazy how one drink can affect your whole entire day, so choose right!
