On January 11, Kali Uchis introduced her new single “After the Storm,” featuring Bootsy Collins and Tyler, The Creator.

Her collaboration with Collins and Creator was no accident. After revealing her wanting to work with Collins in her Billboard feature, Collins reached out to her himself.

Creator started collaborations with Uchis since his 2015 album Cherry Bomb, as well as his recent album Flower Boy.

She started to gain popularity as she began to get featured in many artists’ songs. Michael Edward Burt Jr. (10) said, “When an artist gets another singer to be featured in a track, they sing some parts and that’s that. However, Kali Uchis executes the music better than the original singer. That’s what got me into her.”

Uchis wanted to express hopefulness through her single: with every bad, there is always a good. She said, “The storm may be scary now, but it’s how your flowers bloom later, and paradise is just beyond the rainbow.”

Hannah Cho (12) really liked the message of “After the Storm.” She said, “I definitely agree with the message about getting through it. A lot of modern songs focus on girls, money, sex, or drugs, but her song is full of positivity. It’s just very uplifting.”

The chorus of the song says, “The sun’ll come out, Nothing good ever comes easy.” Uchis puts in words of encouragement and motivation throughout her song, further solidifying the message of her music.

Jillian Siazon (9) agrees with Cho. She said, “I think it’s a really positive because a lot of people are negative today, and the song doesn’t promote anything bad. We can use this message to face everyday with hope.”

Following after the releases of “Tyrant” and “Nuestro Planeta,” “After the Storm” is another single that will end up in her album Fool’s Paradise, dropping in spring.
