Instead of the expected live production of a musical like Grease Live!, Fox released Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again, a remake of the famous 1975 movie musical, Rocky Horror Picture Show on October 20, 2016.

The plot of the film is about how an innocent couple, Brad and Janet unintentionally embark on a sexual journey in the lair of a sweet transvestite, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Rocky Horror Picture Show is known as a cult classic, still adored by passionate audiences who are enchanted by the outlandish concepts of the underground. In fact, Rocky Horror is the longest running film in cinematic history. Due to the success of the original, Fox had some big shoes to fill.

Like any other remake, it is always inevitably going to be compared to the original. In this case, there was an abundance to compare. Right off the bat, one of the major differences was the censorship of some erotic scenes.

Dedicated cinematic fan, Maddie Haynes (10) said, “The tameness of the sexual content ruined it for me. It was not nearly as sexy as the original.”

Another big difference was the wardrobe of the Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Rocky Horror. Instead of the iconic seductive black leather, Dr. Frank-N-Furter — played by Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox. Rocky Horror sported loose gold shorts and lacked a sexy, oiled up six pack.

Film enthusiast, Wade McElhaney (12) said, “I enjoyed the new costumes. Although Laverne Cox is hot, Tim Curry works the Dr. Frank-N-Furter look better.”

A change that shocked viewers was the music. Classic songs like “Toucha Toucha Touch Me” and “Science Fiction Double Feature” were not retouched, however some of the arrangements were.

Dedicated Rocky Horror fan, Hailey Loverde (11) said, “The music was not the same. I wish they just sticked to the original score.”

Out of all televised musicals Fox has produced, this was by far one of the lower ranked productions. No remake of  Rocky Horror Picture Show will do the original justice. Want to see for yourself? Fox’s Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again is available now on fox.com.
