In a statement released on Monday, the Kensington Palace revealed that Meghan Markle is supporting a new charity cookbook that is dedicated to those impacted by the Grenfell Tower fire. The book will be available for purchase on September 25th and showcases over fifty recipes from the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen. In a video posted by Kensington Palace, the Duchess of Sussex speaks about how she became engaged in the creation of Together: Our Community Cookbook.
In the video, Markle says, “Together is a cookbook, but [it is] also the story of a West London community who gathered together in a kitchen and discovered the healing power of food.”
Markle met the women working in the kitchen in January 2018 as she was settling into London. The women had a routine of meeting twice each week at the Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre. Markle began the cookbook project hoping that the profits from the sales of the cookbook would guarantee that the kitchen would be able to operate more regularly, possibly seven days a week. The book features a large variety of recipes, including coconut chicken curry, eggplant masala, green chili and avocado dip, caramelized plum upside-down cake, Persian chicken with barberry rice, and spiced mint tea.
Cookbook enthusiast, Johanna Liu (11), said, “I [did not] even know [Markle] was such a great cook until this cookbook.”
Beginning as a result of the Grenfell Tower fire, which caused seventy two deaths in 2017, the kitchen has now blossomed into a support network. The women who cook there have decided to call it the Hubb Community Kitchen, because in Arabic, “hubb” means “love.”
A dedicated follower of Markle, Nikita Gounder (11), said, “[She] is being very courageous by helping the people around her… I think what [she is] doing is very helpful.”
Although the Duchess has barely begun her first solo project, many are highly anticipating what she will do next.
