Fan Bingbing, China’s most well-paid actress, has not been seen in the public eye for a few months. She usually appeared for the red carpet and movie premieres, starring in multiple Chinese and American films like the X-Men franchise.

Bingbing was last seen on July 1st making a visit to a children’s hospital. Her social media accounts have also been inactivated since July 23rd. Many believe the cause of her sudden disappearance is due to a tax evasion scandal. She has allegedly arranged Yin-Yang contracts. These are a pair of contracts where one states the actual earnings of a movie star while another states a lower amount that is presented to tax officials. She allegedly earned 50 million renminbi ($7.8 million) but disclosed 10 million renminbi ($1.6 million) for one of her productions. The contracts were leaked by Cui Yongyuan, a CCTV producer.

A fan of the X-Men films, Muniza Ahmed (11), stated, “I do believe she disappeared because the Chinese arrested her and nobody knows where she is due to confidentiality matters. However, I have no reason to defend her if the tax evasion accusations prove to be true.”

There is speculation that Bingbing has been placed under house arrest and may need to face a trial, but no official reports of any lawsuits have been released. Many posts on BBC of fans expressing concern for the actress’ whereabouts have been deleted.

A professor at USC, Stanley Rosen, who studies the Chinese film industry commented, “The basic point is to intimidate celebrities with large followings so that they are not too independent and serve as an alternative voice on issues of public import.”

The Chinese government is regularly censoring media that may pose a threat to stability, so there is no official information of what Bingbing may be going through legally.

As a follower of Bingbing, Saron Beraki (11) said, “I miss Fan Bingbing’s acting, but I [do not] mind her taking a break as long as she is okay.”

Bingbing’s fans are highly concerned about her whereabouts and hope she does not face any legal problems. Fans hope to see her in movies and in the public eye soon.
