David Flincher’s Gone Girl, a thrilling mystery blockbuster, was released on October 3, 2014 and since then has made $77.9 million. Based on the original novel written by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl is a suspenseful story about  the disappearance of Amy Dunne, played by Rosamund Pike. Amy and her husband Nick Dunne, played by Ben Affleck, are celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary when she suddenly goes missing. The police are led to believe that Nick is responsible for his wife’s disappearance and leads them on to the investigation to find Amy.

The film takes you on a journey through their love story while conveying the ups and downs that come with every marriage. While watching the movie, the audience is left on their toes because no one ever is really sure of what will happen next. Once the audience can predict something, the film takes a turn in the opposite direction. The movie, in comparison to recent thrillers, is “a breath of fresh air because the plot was so unpredictable with constant twists and turns” said Sarah Williamson (12). The whole movie is one giant plot twist just waiting to happen and there is never knowing who is guilty. As the love story unfolds, new secrets, mysteries, and lies are uncovered.

Every secret is a puzzle piece and at the end of the movie it seems like all the pieces might just fit together; but once again we’re wrong. When the movie ends we are left with an unfinished puzzle and have to create alternate endings for ourselves making the movie even more interesting. Anthony Lane from The New Yorker agrees with saying,  “The film is all about viewpoints, and the urge to shuffle them around,.” Not only did this movie leave audiences speechless, it also sent a message “that you should treat your wife right, or she’ll become crazy” commented Noah Anderson (12). Gone Girl doubles in mystery, hidden messages, and suspense about infidelity and marriage overall. If you’re looking for a movie that will get your brain working and adrenaline pumping head out to see Gone Girl.
