On Tuesday, April 17th, the West High Boys Varsity Tennis team rallied against the Redondo Sea Hawks. The Warriors, who had faced off against the Sea Hawks once before, were worried. With the memory of their defeat just three weeks prior fresh in their minds, the Warriors trudged onto the pavement. However, this time, the Warriors had changed their strategy; they had prevailed, defeating their foe 10-8. This marked the first victory the Warriors had tasted in the Bay League.

The Bay League games had started off rocky for the Warriors. “Ever since we lost [the first game] with Redondo,” started Caleb Yoo (10), “we lost every other game in the Bay League.” Though it can be said that PV and Mira Costa were serious contenders to the Bay League throne, the Warriors were caught in the mud when it came to playing against Redondo and Peninsula. “It just did not work, “exclaimed Joseph Ahn (11).

Yet using a completely different strategy, the Warriors had the edge over the confident Sea Hawks. “Peter Zhang (12) and I won two out of the three games we had,” said Yoo. The collective efforts of the team led to the two point lead required to call a victory. “It’s been a while [since we won, but we did] it,” commented Yoo, proud of their victory.

However, the Sea Hawks were not done. They had a chance to recapture the lead, but Sean Chotikasetien (12) and his partner clinched the victory against Redondo by defeating them square on in doubles. “If [the Sea Hawks] had won in doubles,” said Ahn, “we would have [lost].” The victory in the doubles as well as matchup changes by the coach to take advantage of certain strengths saved the game.

With the Bay League coming to a conclusion, the victory against Redondo was invaluable as it raised the morale and confidence of the players, proving that hard work and dedication can always lead to victory.

On Thursday April 19th, the West High Swim team engaged in a swim meet at Palos Verdes High School. The event allowed the participating swimmers to not only exercise various events, but to also analyze their respective areas of improvement. Because swim meets do not generally conclude with a ‘winning’ and ‘losing’ team up until the following day, swimmers are able to contest in the meet all while eradicating the nerve-racking mindset of defeat.

Every swimmer is required to race in all the events, as this allows them to compete in their strongest events as well as practice their weaker ones. Although swim meets are mostly comprised of races and competitions, many swimmers use the event to become acquainted with their fellow team members. Varsity swimmer Kaileen Taylor (12) stated, “I love meets because they allow everyone to work on various skills that they have. We also bond during swim meets and they give everyone on the team a chance to determine where and how to improve along with how to overall transform themselves into better swimmers.” Eric Nguyen (11), another Varsity swimmer added, “Battling Palos Verdes was not effortless; however, the meet has given us valuable perspective as to how to improve our capability to perform well. With good freshman additions this year, we are a much stronger team.”

As the Warriors and Sea Kings battled in the waves, the Warriors were able to maximize their skills. However, some of the swimmers admit that they do not know everyone on the team – an important factor when it comes to sports. Hana Otsuka (11) commented, “I wish as a team we have more bonding events over the course of the season. I feel that this allow us to get to know everyone on the team.” When asked what she enjoys most about swim meets she stated, “The meets really capitalizes on our sportsmanship as a whole. We often cheer on our team with group chants and it brings us closer to each other.” The Warriors know they have, through hard work and determination, become a stronger team.

Tuesday marked a triumphant return to the season from Spring Break for West High’s track team. Girls Varsity was victorious at the meet against Palos Verdes and Leuzinger, and Boys Varsity just barely lost 65-67.
Despite the fact that Palos Verdes’ track team was especially skilled in distance running, the day was filled with success as many personal records were set. Nina Baker (9) won the high jump at 5’0’’ and varsity member Austin Nuchols (12) definitely did not disappoint by winning the 400-meter run.
Another setback the warrior runners encountered was the intense heat. The high temperature on Tuesday was around 80 degrees, which certainly “took a lot out of [the team],” explained varsity member Madalyn Fleming (12). Yet West’s track team powered on, not letting the sweltering temperatures overwhelm and overpower them in the slightest. Fleming commended her team’s performance by enthusiastically exclaiming, “Overall, we did a great job in the heat, especially just coming back from spring break!”
Clearly heat could not affect these avid runners’ drive and determination to prevail!

During this Boys Varsity Baseball season, members have been rigorously practicing for a successful one. Coach Juan Cueva motivates his team to go out to the field and try their best under any circumstances. But on Wednesday March 28, West had a little bit of a downfall against the South High Spartans.

In the final inning, West was down 10-8 but after scoring a run, the score was 10-9. However, they were unable to complete the comeback against the Spartans, the final score 10-9. Starting Pitcher Teddy Kerwin (12) stated, “We definitely shouldn’t give up especially with this close score. I know we tried our hardest, but I guess luck wasn’t on our side this time.” As the team captain, Kerwin hopes that this loss will help motivate the team. No matter under what circumstances, the team vows to never give up. With upcoming games and multiple chances to make it into CIF, the team has nothing to be sad about. Outfielder Wesley Chipeco (12) states, “I’m really disappointed about this game, especially since we were so close. But all we can do at this point is hit harder, run faster, and do better by working together.” With such inspirational words, the team doesn’t look at the game as a loss but as a lesson to learn from. “Sometimes things don’t go your way, and you just have to accept it.”

The season is just starting, so be sure to catch a game while you can! The team continues to try their best until the end.

There is no doubt that the West High Boys Varsity Baseball team gives up on any practices and games. This motivation comes from the coaches as well as the team captain. For Pitcher Teddy Kerwin (12), baseball is his main focus for the rigorous season up ahead.

As team captain, Kerwin holds a great deal of responsibility on his hands such as leading practices or motivating his team to do well all the time. But no matter what action he takes, the team always views him as part of the team. Wearing number 24, he prides himself in being the starting pitcher and even moves in between playing different infield positions. Kerwin is constantly motivated by Coach Juan Cueva, vowing to never give up on his team no matter what circumstances may appear.

According to Kerwin, “Being on the team for four years seems so surreal because I hold such a position. The team is very close and bonded, which is really good because it means that we can take criticism from time to time.” The team constantly wants to improve their game, to stand out from one another and improve how the hit, throw, or run. It calls for immediate learning and reflexes, in order to go up against any challenge and school.

He also remarks that CIF would be ideal for him and his teammates, “because baseball at West is not generally known as making it that far. Ending my senior year with playoffs is probably one of the best gifts I could receive.”

As a team captain, Kerwin not only plays for himself, but for the team as well. Baseball is a more complicated sport than people think it is, due to the fact that it takes so much core strength and ability to see from afar. “I admit that I’ve had my fair share of mistakes and regrets, but I’ve definitely improved my game since freshman year.”

Boys Varsity Baseball is not to be taken kindly especially with skilled players that play with a lot of heart. Come to the boys’ games and watch as they try to fulfilling their goal of advancing to CIF.

Some people inherit their mother’s striking green eyes, their father’s smile, or their grandfather’s chiseled jaw line. Others, such as Cory Gehr (12), are passed down something a bit different. From his family, he did not inherit a smile or a defined bone structure. Instead, there is one passion Gehr shares with his father and grandfather that has been a part of him since the day he was born: basketball.

With an inherent ardor towards the sport, Gehr entered West High as a freshman and naturally, joined the basketball team. He dribbled on through the next couple of years until he finally earned his spot on the varsity team this year as a senior. Throughout the years, Gehr has come to realize his strong areas of play. In his opinion, he is “a good shooter, can jump pretty high considering [his] height, and can use [his] length to tip passes and get steals on the defensive end.” Like any skilled and conscientious basketball player, however, Gehr is aware that with strengths come weaknesses. For him, these faults are “in the dribbling category, and in the post, due to [his] size.”

Though he may not be a perfect player, he clearly is able to work past his weak spots and succeed with the rest of his team. This season, the team made it into the play-offs for CIF, and considering the fact that “our league is tough, I think we did well,” Gehr commented. Yet the highlight of the season, according to Gehr, was the team’s trip to San Diego over winter break, which “gave [them] a good chance to bond and come together as a team more, and in the end helped [them] on the court as well.”

When Gehr is not on the court, he can be found playing guitar, listening to music, or just hanging out with friends; “all the ‘normal’ high school stuff,” as Gehr described it. He also enjoys the occasional football or soccer game with a few friends.

Though “basketball will always be a part of [his] life,” Gehr does not plan on pursuing basketball in college, other than perhaps as an intramural. His reasons are that he “wants to focus on [his] studies, and ultimately [his] future” proving that not only is Gehr a dedicated athlete, but he is also a focused, ambitious student who will definitely go far in life…with or without a basketball in hand.

During this Boys Varsity Basketball season, players have endured several tough games and rough practices. But for Stefan Inouye (11), a game face is always seen on the basketball court.

For some, sports are considered as a side activity or hobby that relieves stress. But it is definitely the opposite for Inouye. Playing basketball since the first grade, Inouye could never imagine life without such an intense sport. He commented, “Playing the sport throughout elementary and middle school years, I always had the dream of becoming the next Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan like many others. But when I reached high school, I immediately realized that I was not one of the best anymore.” With this in mind, he continued living his humble approach to basketball as he got older.

Inouye discovered that the competition only got better as he matured, which motivated him to be more successful on the court. He made Junior Varsity his freshman year, but found himself “sitting on the benches behind a transfer student from Long Beach during multiple games.” This only motivated him to improve in many areas in order to make Varsity in his sophomore year. The fact was that Inouye was extremely competitive because of the hundreds of thousands of people reaching for the same dream of basketball. In return for his dedication to the sport, Inouye became a starting a Varsity Basketball starting guard.

With Coach Paul Nitake and Coach Uchida always guiding his directions on the court, Inouye always respected them as his mentors. “The coaches would often put me through two-hour practices during the summer and intense sessions in the weight room. But Coach Harvey Kitani ignited my flame of passion for this game. He’s taught me everything I know about basketball and truly molded into a better player.” He also remarks that his success is not solely due to himself, but his supportive family and friends. “I honestly appreciate my parent’s support, especially when they let me stay in the gym with my coaches to three in the morning.”

In some great athletes, the love of a sport develops at young ages, an almost foreshadowing of the abundance of talent to appear later in their lives.
This was exactly the case for varsity basketball member Justin Liu (12). He began dribbling a ball at age six, and inherited a love for basketball from his father who “played a lot of basketball when he was younger (and still does)” As Liu matured, he continued to shoot hoops through elementary school and middle school until he suddenly found himself at the gates of West High as a freshman. Overwhelmed and anxious, Liu sought comfort in the one thing he knew he was familiar with—basketball. Liu started off as an anxious freshman on the frosh/soph team, and worked and played hard during his years of high school; eventually earning him his current spot on the varsity team.
Today, as an experienced senior varsity member, Liu reflects on how he has grown over the years and identifies his key weakness and strength. Though his anxiousness has never fully dissipated—he “sometimes overthinks and [gets] very nervous on the court”—Liu is also “very patient [with] a quick first step.” Patience is a virtue, especially when waiting to be assigned as point guard, which is the favorite position of Liu because “[he likes] having control over the game.”
A game that Liu certainly helped control was the one against Torrance High school at the Staples Center, the match which he considers to be the highlight of this year’s season so far because of their major win.
When he is not contributing the team’s victories, or practicing free throws, Liu can be found relaxing and hanging out with friends. He also loves to play football, his second favorite sport (first being basketball, of course!). Though don’t expect to see him around the courts too often next year. Liu does not plan to pursue basketball in his college career, but simply “play in his free time [and possibly] play some intramural sports.”

The squeak of Jordan basketball shoes could be heard loudly against the polished West High Gym floor as the West High Varsity Girls basketball team played to their fullest extent on Friday January 27th at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Warriors executed superb teamwork, fluid passes, and swift steps as they overcame the opposing Mira Costa Mustangs, winning 45-38.

The Warriors followed through with their previous promises to perform well, as giving up is not an option for the team. The Lady Warriors implemented skill, talent, and effort as they paved their way to victory. Watching them play, it was evident that their long, strenuous practices rightfully paid off. Varsity Forward, Shonteau-Trudeau Katoa (12) exclaimed, “There was so much energy on the court, and it felt as if the team was connected as one throughout the game. We knew that if a certain player needed assistance in guarding off another player, we would jump in and help her, while another player would focus on the offense.” Anything that could be done to ensure satisfying results for the team was done.

Their evident readiness allowed them to obtain the victory and show the opposing team who owned the court. Guard Jaime Kusumoto (11) reflected, “Looking up at the scoreboard and seeing the final score, was presumably the greatest feeling. We deserved the win and it simply just goes to show how hard we work.” Captain Nicole Nitake (12), in agreement with Kusumoto’s statement, stated, “We played a great game. We were focused and ready to dominate with our positive and confident mindset and this allowed us to seize the win. We know we are a ‘tough’ team capable of winning when we set our minds to it, the important thing is translating that theory into our games, and we did just that.” The Warriors are ready to continue advancing up the scoreboards and they know that if they incorporate the same energy and skill into their upcoming game against {insert info} they have almost a guaranteed victory.

Currently holding a 7-1 record in Bay League play, the Lady Warriors are unstoppable and ready for anything that comes their way.

Saturday, January 14th, marked the day of the West High Boys Varsity Basketball team’s annual match against Torrance High at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The game was “something that our team had been looking forward to for weeks,” according to Austin Bogar (12). As further explained by Bogar, the anticipation of this game was heightened by the fact that “all of these great NBA superstars have played on the same floor that we got to play on.”
The exhilaration of playing at the center that is home to famed professional basketball teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers was intensified by West’s victory. Although in Jamin Lackey’s (11) opinion, “getting used to the depth perception of the [Staples Center] court” was the most challenging aspect of the game, yet the varsity boys kept their composure and beat Torrance in dominating fashion with a score of 48-26.
Cory Gehr (12) was one of the few varsity members who have experienced a game at the Staples Center before; nonetheless, he was in concordance with Bogar’s enthusiasm about playing at a court shared by professional basketball teams. Gehr attributed to West’s achievement to state that they were “successful in shutting down Torrance’s key players,” due to the fact that prior to the game, “[Coach Nitake] gave a thorough scouting report, [giving them] a huge advantage by knowing [Torrance’s] personnel and which players to stop.” Overall, Gehr reflected, “We just came out focused and ready to play and ended up with a huge win.”
Hopefully, the team can maintain such a positive, determined attitude and walk away from next year’s match at StaplesCenter with yet another triumph over their cross-town rivals.
